What is Identity Correction?
Take on the persona of an organization/government with power, and talk like their PR department developed a conscience. It’s a way to speak truth to power – you speak as a group in power, and say a small lie that reveals a greater truth.
Examples of Identity Correction: There are two options with identity correction: go further than the organization you’re parodying would (be satirical) or say something true about the organization that they would never say. Using the first tactic, Billionaires for Bush put Social Security up for sale on eBay. Using the second tactic, U.S. Uncut activists announced GE would pay its 2010 taxes.
How can you adapt this to peace advocacy? Here are some ideas:
Identity corrections are especially powerful in how the target reacts. Can you imagine GE having to announce it will not pay its 2010 taxes? Here are some ideas:
- Put in an op-ed in your local/campus paper an apology to the public from the U.S. government, admitting to the illegality of the Iraq War/the war crime of the bombing of a MSF hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan/etc.
- Ask all Muslim students to proceed to a particular room for mandatory registration, as sponsored by Trump for America. Then hold an anti-hate speech rally.
